The School by the Sea is a nickname used to proudly state the unique opportunities and experiences that Tabor’s location offers. One of the defining factors that compelled me to apply to Tabor was the hands-on pedagogy that places the concept of understanding over the task of memorization in all classes, but I was most impressed by the courses taught in the Marine and Nautical Science Center. The curriculum of these courses takes full advantage of Tabor’s defining feature by basing labs and lectures off of ecosystems and organisms that can be found right outside the classroom.

The definition of a team is a group of people or players who come together to achieve a common goal. As the fall season comes to an end and a new winter season begins, the Tabor Academy boys’ varsity hockey team will be looking to make a lasting impact on New England prep school hockey. After graduating 13 seniors last year, there are plenty of new faces that will be wearing a Seawolf jersey this year. As a very new and young team, there is a significant amount of adversity the squad will need to overcome as a team, the key phrase being ‘as a team.’ One of the most essential parts of a team is the commitment to the common goal. In other words, one must be able to overlook personal statistics, achievements, and accolades and concentrate all focus towards the betterment of the team. This is a key piece in being an effective leader, and one certainly does not need a C on their jersey in order to do this.

Someone recently asked me what I thought might have been the best weekend activity so far this year. It is hard for me to pick just one because, of course, I want everything that we plan from weekend to weekend to be the best. But after thinking about it, two things come to mind.

Throughout November our six choral groups have been knee deep in preparations for our annual Festival of Lessons and Carols. We get only one chance to rehearse as a group so every note and phrase; every step and movement must be choreographed in advance so that our 60 choristers can unite and sing as one.
To my freshman self four years ago, leadership sounded like a far-fetched idea. Playing saxophone is definitely one of my biggest passions in life, but as the last-seat saxophone in wind ensemble and a “newbie” in jazz band, what could I do to make a real impact?

Demystifying the Financial Aid Process at Boarding Schools
On November 1, School and Student Services (SSS) by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) rolled over the financial aid application from the current academic year to the next. Families wishing to apply for financial aid now have the ability to visit the website, create an account, and begin reviewing the application forms. Some families will need time to gather documents, speak with family members, and other steps as needed. The application is due February 1st with the remainder of the student’s admission application. The additional steps required for a financial aid application can feel like obstacles when families are left without sufficient information. The goal of this post is to provide insight into the process, practical tips and advice, and to demystify the financial aid process for prospective Tabor Academy families.

Tabor to present The Laramie Project
Every other spring since the 1990’s, Tabor Academy has exchanged a drama production with Ellesmere College, a private high school in Ellesmere, England. This year, Tabor will send a group on the exchange again, bringing one of our fall productions, titled The Laramie Project.
Boarding Schools Collaborate to Launch "Thoughtpaper"
I’m the Editor of The Tavern for Tabor. The Tavern is a “thoughtpaper” filled with opinion articles written by students that pertain to daily life, rather than reporting or standard journalism seen in traditional newspapers. Tabor is one of ten prep schools involved in The Tavern. The other nine are Brooks School, Concord Academy, Governor’s Academy, Groton, Milton, Northfield Mount Hermon, Andover, St. Mark’s, and Deerfield.
Tabor Students Attend Harvard Science Research Conference
Having always been a science geek my whole life whose dream is to become a researcher, I was intrigued when Mrs. Norris announced that there would be a research conference at Harvard University to which high school students could apply. After a week of anticipation (though it felt more like a year to me), I received an email titled “Harvard Science Research Conference Acceptance!” and was not able to contain my scream during study hall in the library. Yes, it was awkward, but that was how excited I was, knowing that I would have the privilege to attend the 2016 HRSC.

I have been involved in Scouting since first grade, when I first joined as a Tiger Cub. While I have learned countless things through my experience that are integral parts of my personality, the most important thing that Scouting has taught me is a love of the environment. It only makes sense, then, that my Eagle Scout project was based heavily on an environmental focus in my hometown of Jamestown, RI – installing a water collection system on a greenhouse at a local farm, helping to conserve a vital resource on an island community. This project qualified me for not only the rank of Eagle Scout, but also for the Hornaday Conservation Award – a decoration for achievement in environmental stewardship and protection. The quest for these two recognitions has been a large part of my adolescence, and I hope to help those younger than me to find the same passion.
