This year, I am so pleased to be the co-head of the Environmental Club at Tabor along with Izzy Vismara, who started the Earth Club last year and was seeking some new ideas to engage more students in order to, as she says, “help bring the Tabor community to a greener place!” I was compelled to help lead the club due to all I learned about environmental issues and sustainability during my fall study abroad junior year at The Island School in the Bahamas. It was fun to compile my ideas into a proposal over the summer and now to work with Izzy and the club members to implement them.
The segment, “What will you do?” was one of the ideas I came up with to present ways Tabor students can be more environmentally conscious by altering simple habits that can make a big difference. At All School Meeting, we have shared a few ideas such as ways to save water, or to cut down on plastic waste, then posing the question: “What will you do?” We hope it has students thinking!
Another idea we plan to implement are opportunities for students to watch documentaries on environmental issues and then have a discussion to see what impressions the students took away.
Izzy and I are also interested to see where we can add more sustainability in the dining hall. Just a few thoughts are Meatless Mondays (we are talking to our dining hall staff about having a station available for those who want to participate), a better recycling system, and ways to measure monthly food waste.
The goal of our club is to make Tabor students more aware about the importance of this work. Because sustainability is so important to me, I hope to be able to implement these ideas and more!
