Stepping Up to Lead!

This morning, we enjoyed the speeches of eleven students who aspire to being our next Co-Heads of School, our leaders of student government. I was inspired to create a post because of their excellence in presentation, as well as their clear thought as to what a Head of School can really do. There were no outlandish promises, (well, maybe one: abolishing Saturday Classes) but more a description of passionate commitment to all that Tabor is and can become. It was really impressive. They were prepared; they are ready to take the mantel.

The candidates sought stronger community bonds, more spirit at games, and more activities during weekends that could include good clean fun like field days and water balloon fights. The kinds of things that make us smile and laugh together and form friendships beyond the typical groups created within teams, dorms or class. There was discussion of tightening bonds with alumni and bringing our full community together for fellowship now and then. All great ideas! Even the idea of abolishing Saturday Classes was delivered with a can-do attitude, not a fist-pounding demand, but a thoughtful suggestion that the student felt if brought forth in the right way might actually produce productive conversation. Altogether, I was impressed by the maturity, confidence, and pure love for Tabor that each of them possessed.

I just thought you would enjoy knowing that your school is in good hands, and that student leadership is alive and well here!

P.S.: You may have noted that I said Co-Heads. I did. TASC (TA Student Council) underwent a process this year to field two simultaneous elections to hire both a male and female Head of School. The job is huge, the school is equally male and female, and we hope this provides better representation, more leadership opportunities and more diverse leadership styles to flourish at Tabor. So far, with six male candidates and seven female candidates running, we are off to a good start! I'll keep you posted on the results.
