Our American Government class is engaging the student body in the Presidential and Massachusetts Senate elections with some informative All School meeting presentations. Last week, we had a very informative lesson on the personal and professional backgrounds of the presidential candidates. More presentations will follow each Friday. We hope to teach about our Senate candidates, share some policy positions papers for and against issues, and also raise some awareness about political advertising, including how to fact check the candidates. Finally, a voter registration drive is in the works to register our students who are Massachusetts residents and of age to begin voting.
A wonderful opportunity for more engagement comes this weekend for five members of the class who will travel to Hotchkiss School for the first Annual Hotchkiss Political Conference (http://hotchkisspoliticalconference.org). They will be addressed by the keynote speaker, Lisa Brown, who currently serves President Obama as Staff Secretary, managing communications to the president and circulating documents among senior staff for comment. Students at the conference will break into groups with other private and public school students to address a broad problem and propose a solution. The five topics are increasing executive power, campaign finance, Congressional partisanship, partisanship in the Supreme Court, and Healthcare. We look forward to the ideas these students come home with to further engage the Tabor Community in this election season.
Creating committed citizens is part of Tabor's ongoing mission, and this is a terrific year to highlight the importance of being informed, finding the facts, and getting involved in our local and federal government.
