Leadership? Right this Way!

We have just enjoyed a two-day event focused on leadership for our entire school community. Students and faculty, led by alumni and friends and special guests, learned the value they can bring to any situation to make it better.

Jack Clark, Rugby Coach at Cal, was our Keynote Speaker and kicked things off for us nicely on Sunday night. His message was that we can all be situational leaders, whether or not we consider ourselves "leaders." This was the perfect entree for our students.

At Tabor, there are so many students who consider themselves leaders due to specific roles or titles: team captains, proctors, peer counselors, student council members and so many more. But there are many who don't have those opportunities. This day was a day for us to realize that no matter what our roles, we can all act as leaders.

We defined leadership as any act that we can take that can make someone around us, or something around us, better. Not so intimidating, right! Anyway, it hit the mark. Our students jumped into the workshops with alumni and activities and really learned about their leadership styles, various problem solving techniques, what sorts of people to surround themselves with, and even how to carry themselves to enhance their confidence and leadership opportunities. They learned how they can apply their values and skills to make things work better around them and how to enhance their own capacity for leadership.

It was an inspiring day, and all the more as it came about due to a very personal and generous gift from the Graboys family. Lois & George Graboys '50, due to their own devotion to young people and developing leaders, were given a present by their children: an endowed fund at Tabor to run an annual event focused on leadership called the Graboys Leadership Symposium.

Tabor's students and faculty thank the Graboys family, our presenters and workshop leaders, our alumni volunteers Nicole DeBlois '95, Ashunta Sheriff '92, Cynthia Way '92 and Jonathan Baron '95, and Chris Millette, our faculty organizer, for their own leadership in making this all happen, and for a most excellent day of learning that will no doubt last a lifetime!
