Orientation at Sea!

Of the 163 new students arriving next week, 83 began their Tabor experience with a week onboard TABOR BOY this summer during our Orientation at Sea Program.

Six groups of 10-15 students each enjoyed an experience sailing on TABOR BOY around Buzzards Bay. The groups bond almost immediately in the small confines of the vessel as they play name games and learn the traditions and history of the TABOR BOY and sail training at Tabor from Captain Geil. They quickly learn the ropes, quite literally, and with the guidance of the student crew, sail off with their new ship mates after a fun night getting to know each other. It is important to note that the student crew are clearly leaders and teachers, doing much of the work with the new students along with the Program Director, Emily Chandler '05, who oversees an academic component. The students receive an introduction to oceanograhpy, coastal marine science, navigation and the history of Buzzards Bay. These lessons allows students to put Tabor in the larger context of its surroundings. It is a totally unique program and we are very proud of it.

More importantly, it works. The kids bond. Here is what Brett Dineen '16 said, "Spending a week on TABOR BOY with your new classmates allows you to get to know them on a personal level while you live together in very limited space. You will have a connection with those people for the rest of your time at Tabor."

Under Captain Geil's leadership, and that of his student crew, our new students are introduced to the discipline, traditions and behaviors expected of our students. They learn responsibility, respect, and teamwork. They learn the very real importance of competency, trust, and safety and its impact on community. They also learn how to have fun exploring something new.

What a great introduction to our school!
