All American Wrestlers

DSC_6559We just finished another incredibly exciting year of Tabor Wrestling. I wanted to share some news from Coach Conan Leary '97 about his team and their success this year.

Conan reports, "Our wrestlers have to place top 7 out of 48 at our New England Tournament to qualify for the Nationals. Johnny Anderson '15 and Todd Bazarewsky '13 both took 2nd at the New England Tournament and Miko McGuire '13 wrestled a wonderful tournament placing 3rd - just 1 point away from the finals.

"The National Tournament is made up of over 500 wrestlers representing over 150 teams from all over the country. The tournament is held at Lehigh University in PA and lasts for two days. A wrestler has to place top 8 in their weight class to become an All-American. All 3 of Tabor's wrestlers had several extremely hard fought bouts and carried Tabor to a top 20 finish in the country.

"Miko McGuire narrowly missed earning All-American honors, losing in the round of twelve by just 1 pt. Johnny Anderson redeemed an earlier season loss to advance to the round of 12 then won his next match by 8 points moving him into the All-American rounds. And in the round of twelve, Todd Bazarewsky was able to to defeat the opponent that he lost to in the N.E. finals. Once in the placing rounds, Todd upset the #4 ranked wrestler at 220lbs and wrestled a final match for 5th or 6th place which he won.

"Tabor now has a total of 25 All-Americans and 5 top 20 finishes in our 44 years of competing at the National Tournament.

"Here is a photo of Todd Bazarewsky and John Anderson holding our Nationals Board with their names freshly printed on it. These are two wonderful kids in and out of the wrestling room and have been a wonderful addition to the Tabor Community."

Our hearty congrats to our team, and our National Tournament wrestlers and our latest All-Americans! Well done!

PS: We have just been notified that Travis Friedman '98 was also an All-American in his weight class in 1998, which we had not recognized on our National Boards at Tabor. We appreciate the correction and will revise the boards as soon as possible for posterity. (Travis is included in the total of 25 Tabor All-Americans mentioned above.)
