Some Smarts!

We enjoyed a chance to honor some of Tabor's best and brightest today!

We had six students, out of 34,000 nationally, recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as commended. Commended students placed in the top 5% of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2011 PSAT last October. Further, two of our students reached the status of National Merit Semifinalists. They are among 16,000 students nationally and represent the top 1% of all students participating in the program. They have the opportunity to compete for valuable scholarships for college.

Another measure of academic horsepower is the number of AP classes one takes with a successful score of 3 or better on the AP exam (scored 1-5). These classes are sought after as many colleges will grant college course credit or advanced standing to those receiving the score of 3 or higher. They also indicate to competitive colleges which applicants are capable of successful completion of college level work. We had some impressive numbers to report and I thought you would enjoy hearing them and celebrating our students' success!

According to Mr. Doggett, Director of Studies, 193 Tabor students sat for a total of 473 AP exams with over 80% of those receiving a score of 3 or higher. Beyond that achievement, The College Board recognizes three levels of distinction through which 72 of our students were recognized. We had:

  • 26 AP Scholars who received a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams
  • 22 AP Scholars with Honor who received an average score of 3.25 on all AP exams taken, with scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
  • 24 AP Scholars with Distinction who received an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, with scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

These are fantastic achievements for our students and for the faculty who worked with them. Congratulations!
